Fed: Labor frontbenchers join truck safety launch
Labor frontbenchers MARTIN FERGUSON and BOB MCMULLAN have joined truck drivers to launchthe 2002 national drive for safety in Canberra.
Mr FERGUSON -- the opposition transport spokesman -- has urged the federal governmentto take better care of Australian roads in an effort to help the death toll.
He says the equivalent of six jumbo jet loads of people die on Australian roads everyyear and high quality infrastructure can help reduce that tragic toll on families andcommunities.
Mr FERGUSON says a declining trend of road deaths is in jeopardy under the government'sAusLink policy -- its 10-year program for land transport.
Under the proposals, private enterprise would be encouraged to invest in the developmentof some major infrastructure projects.
At the same time, the government would seek some joint funding for national highways-- something currently funded 100 per cent by the Commonwealth.
