NSW: Union campaign against workers comp changes

A media campaign condemning controversial changes to the New South Wales Workers Compensation
Act begins today.

As union representatives meet Industrial Relations Minister JOHN DELLA BOSCA at the
negotiating table this morning, the NSW Labor Council will kick off a series of newspaper
and radio ads to highlight the unions' concerns.

Television commercials are also being prepared.

Council secretary MICHAEL COSTA says in coming weeks they'll be raising examples of
how these proposals will effect real, working people.

The government has introduced a bill aimed at reducing a $2.2 million deficit in the
compensation scheme by encouraging injured workers not to take their dispute to court.

Key concerns cited by the NSW Labor Council include a new US-style assessment scheme,
making it harder to access compensation, and increasing thresholds to take common law
action.
